It seems that some people get stuck on that last phase, also called the 'drink neat or be an idiot' phase or the 'it's Bacardi so it must be bad' phase.
Currently, I try to appreciate different rums for what they're trying to be. I'm not saying that all rums are equal and that we can't discuss about tastes, because it's a matter of preferences, that is too easy. There is quality as well. I would not consider seriously the opinion of someone trying to put Bacardi Gold in the same category as ED 15 or ST 1796 for example. But to diss a mixer rum because it is a mixer rum is pointless. To diss someone because their taste is different is pointless as well.
I've been thinking about the different phases of rum drinking lately and couldn't have qualified this any better myself.
One of the goals of this forum is to express opinions and comments. While it is not my goal for this to be a place only for criticism of products, constructive criticism of products, marketing and presentations can be useful.
As has been stated above, we should respect the time and effort it takes for a supplier to add to this forum. I think it says a lot about this forum that only a few people have been banned, and only after they insisted on criticizing producers and other forum members without contributing to this forum.
As an administrator, I can tell you that I block more than one supplier a week who comes on this forum, doesn't introduce them self and starts writing about how great their product is and how everyone should love it.
I appreciate any supplier coming to this forum to honestly discuss their product, how and why it is made the way it is. There have also been suppliers called out for promoting products that aren't what they claim to be. I have been threatened by suppliers after I wrote things on this and other sites that they didn't like, but in the end, they did agree that I wasn't making false statements.
In the end, I support constructive criticism, as long as it is honest criticism based on facts. On the other hand I will never support false claims or criticism that isn't based on facts. If you don't like something that is fine, tell us. If you don't like something based on your prejudice, that's alright too, as long as you are respectful of others. But you should be aware that saying that you don't like xyz product because it is made in abc country, or by acb company, may just go to show your intolerance for expanding your knowledge.
Saying that I've yet to taste a product from acb or abc that I like is more appropriate than saying I hate acb or abc products, unless we have tasted every product from acb or abc.
As more new products come to the market I expect more controversy on this forum and I welcome respectful discussion.
A few weeks ago thrall suggested that we have custom user titles, maybe someday we'll have a 'used to mix with hfcs' user title.
