Default Beware the Kraken

Sounds soooo Ominous, doesn't it?

Actually, I bought Kraken Rum just to show off on my "rum jungle" shelf along with my collection of other rums. Kraken is inexpensive in price, 94 proof (never a good sign), dark chocolate color that screams of artificial carmel, and quirky label which I've learned often is a substitute for good taste... I expected my purchase only to have the funny looking bottle as visual candy for my collection shelf.

And then I tasted it. wow! Smooth, smooth, smooth ...... licorice, cinnamon, very yummy. I could easily enjoy this over ice; the only thing to "beware" is the kick this might give an unsuspecting drinker who would have NO IDEA this is an overproof rum!

I very much enjoyed this rum, and look forward to seeing how you all enjoy it too.

Glad you liked your bottle of Kraken. There is a growing trend among more flavorful spirits toward higher bottled proof though at 94 proof, this wouldn't be considered overproof.

I really like this rum. Surprisingly smooth for 94 proof. I'm sure there will be a lot of promotions once the "Clash of the Titans" is released.

I whole heartedly agree!!! I am on the second bottle, and I too bought it because of the "cool" factor of the bottle. I opened it at a party and poured a little over ice (just to taste) I almost put it back up to save it, but at under $20.00, what the heck. Everyone loved it. Actually it was empty and a bottle of Captain Morgan's was only half used. I fully expected the reverse to be true.
As far as less expensive speiced rums, I think it is superior to Captains, or Sailor Jerry's (both of which are always around at my home). Every now and then those quirky labels and cool bottles are hiding something spectacular!!!

I tried Kraken for the first time last night. It has a lot of flavor, and I like it for a casual sip or shot, but it's also obvious that there is a lot of coloring/additives in this rum. In that regard, it reminds me of Sailor Jerry's -- Kraken is sweet and immediately friendly, with strong vanilla/medicinal flavors. But I don't think I would drink much of this, it just seems to lack character and depth.

I too have just added Kraken to my collection. An unexpected treat. I also just purchased a bottle of Kilo Kai. May be worth your consideration as well.

Against my better judgement, on the recommendation of a local liquor store owner we bought some Kilo Kai at Christmas time for nogg related activities. We found the stuff to be vile, undrinkable .... better to drink straight cough syrup. I should have know better to buy a Caribbean product with a Hawaiian name! In all fairness i do not like spiced rums nor have I knowingly set foot on a vessel with spiced rum aboard. perhaps this Kraken stuff can change my mind.

I'll say this here, and I'll say this elsewhere: Try a Mai-Tai using both The Kraken and J. Wray and Nephew overproof rum. Amazing! Kudos to Tom Brown at The Passenger in D.C. for making that one.

I too came up with this combo last summer. Daddy's taking his strong medicine again! Really, really good Mai tais.
