Hurricanes are always bad for the islands, but it is encouraging that there is still time for some of the crop to recover before the harvest after the first of the year. Unlike crops like bananas which can't survive hurricanes, sugar cane is amazing resilient. Last year, Martinique suffered several storms and although there was considerable damage, the sugar cane crop wasn't a complete loss.

If the water receded fast enough from the low lying fields, the roots of the hardy plant won't be damaged too much and the sugar cane will survive. Sometimes it is good to be a member of the grass family.

Question

Hurricane season is starting up again and the news reports state the first named storm of the year just missed Haiti.

Are there any other stories from the past of Hurricanes taking out distilleries or sinking large shipments of rum?
