Santa Teresa Selecto

What do you do when its snowstorm? definetily not go out..:eek: what can be better than reading this nice forum and drinking some rum?..so i tried a "first kiss" from Santa Teresa Selecto and i found it very nice, it tastes quite a lot of caramel and has a slight peppery finish. Its nice to try new rums whether its snowstorm or not!

I got this rum recently. I liked it, but it was a more change of pace rum for me. Perhaps itd go well with diet coke (vices... <shrug>). Perhaps I will pour one right now! CHeers!

Which one did you taste?...the old one or the new one.

To note, Santa Teresa has recently launched Selecto brand under the selling name of "Blend of Rums". From their web page http://www.selecto.com.ve they claim the following:

I have not tasted yet. I saw it in the market shelf and I was particularly impressed with price that is around 25 USD. I respect a lot Santa Teresa's heritage and particularly this Vollmer family that has done a tremendous work to maintain a Rum tradition in Venezuela but this price is well above the buying capacity of the majority of Venezuelans. I still believe that Rum should be accessible to low socioeconomic classes. Anyway their still having Santa Teresa good value choices like Gran Reserva, Carta Roja and Superior. Marketing campaign of new Selecto is very strong with wonderful POP materials.

Looks like I have another Santa Teresa rum to try. The 1796 is wonderful, and I just discovered the Gran Reserva last month. The latter is great over a couple of ice cubes. It's a good thing I picked up a handle of it, because I've reached for it consistently over the last four weeks.

The old select have the correct price for what it offers. It's a medium quality rum. Instead the Santa Teresa 1796 it's a complex and rich rum, sweet but very very pleasant.

Santa Teresa 1796 Solera is an upper tier rum and in my opinion does not compare with new Selecto. 1796 is great alone of with little ice. Based on the advertising behind the new Selecto it is a blend of rums used to prepare cocktails. The change of the bottle makes it better to handle for the bar tender. Old Selecto rum had very small shelf presence...new Selecto is both product and image innovation...a total re-launch of the brand. Santa Teresa Gran Reserva, Superior and Carta Roja are definetelly low tier products very afforable with prices ranging from 4 to 10 USD per bottle and also used to prepare cocktails.

Hi, new member here in California!

The new Selecto is what made me get interested in Rum and ultimately sign up on here. Unfortunately I can't seem to find it where I live, so I am currently trying to find something similar to it. The first one I checked out since was Flor de Cana 7, but I found it to be noticeably harsher on the palate than the Selecto and having a more "alcoholic" smell to it, if that makes any sense. I wouldn't say I don't like it, but it's definitely not the kind of rum that would have made me seek out this forum as the Selecto did.

Obviously, I'm a total noob, so please bear with me. Do you guys have any recommendation as to what else I should try?

Hi Lou. I always recommend Pampero, especially to someone interested in indulging in rum from Venezuela. I think you'll like it, and it's available everywhere; BevMo always has it, for example.

As Venezuelan I can say that if you stop by you need to buy the following:

1) Santa Teresa Gran Reserva
2) Pampero Aniversario
3) Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva

Thos are my 3 tops fro any foreign person...
