I dare not mention Ron Matusalem

Thanks for your help on any information you can provide on this.

About eight years ago I was given a bottle of Ron Matusalem 15 years. It has a black plastic lid but no paper seal on the top. It's definitely from when Matusalem was made in Cuba and before they moved to the Dominican Republic.

The person that gave it to me got it from Cuba and said that it was a rare rum. I've been keeping it for a special occasion but am desperate to drink it. I guess I'm interested to know more about it and whether it's VERY VERY special, or one that I should crack soon.

so I recently tried Ron Matusalem from a bottle someone brought back from Cuba. But the stuff you buy here is from the Dominican republic (and I don't think its very good). The bottle of the Cuban type I tried was also 15 year and had a black label.

I asked @cocktailwonk on twitter and he didn't really have an explanation. Someone with the handle @rumfanatic replied saying it was made by" Ronera Caney from Sant de Cuba locally in Cuba".

Yes there are two very different Matusalem rums. The Cuban one and one blended and bottled in the DR, which is heavily flavored with vanilla and bears what I consider to be a very misleading label featuring a 10 or 15 Solera Blender claim. I have seen too many US liquor stores claiming that this was 10 or 15 years old and because of all the references to Cuba that this was made in Cuba - under a special concession from Washington.

The Cuban Matusalem is sold in Cuba but also available in St Maarten and other free ports in the Caribbean.
