Default Once you open a bottle of rum, then what?

So Ed, you add in glass marbles until less than 1/3 of the bottle is empty!?
You would need a sh*** load of marbles no?

Sipping a glass from my bottle of Doorly's XO, 3 years since opened first time, still a pleasure, and rich on taste and alcohol. Haven't thought about oxidation before, and with about 25 bottles of opened rum i'll probably wait a bit opening the next bottle. But still, don't make it a big problem. There's also a lot of benefits with the opitunity to compare several rums to each other.

I try and only open one or two bottles at a time, so it's not usually an issue...

What I will contribute is that I saw a test done (tv/cooking show) with Wine (for whatever that's worth) and how to best preserve it once opened (wine has a much much shorter life once opened than spirits, obviously...)

They tried the vacuum type preservers (remove air, rubber reuseable cork), inert gas, freezing, and simply re-corking the bottle.

They had a panel of sommeliers taste the wine when freshly opened, after 3 days and again after 7. The winner was the bottle from the freezer. Whether this would hold true with Rum or not who knows.....

Just my 2 cents!

What about placing the rum inside one of those small oak barrels?

I got one that fits two bottles but have seen smaller ones.

I have both a Quorhum 23 and a El dorado 15 that has been open for around a year, and they really taste about the same as when i first opend them! I also have some bottle of Swedish punsch that has been opened for like 2 years that are tasty! But punsch is a arrak liquor so maybe the sugar in the spirit keeps the alcohol from not oxidate that much! Sorry for the Spelling!

I made a post about my current collection of rums, which to the average person and even some collectors would be considered fairly large.

I tend to have several bottles open at a time. In some cases, opened bottles have been on the shelf for years. Since I am generally not a sipper, but mix almost exclusively with Diet Coke, I haven't truly noticed much deterioration. That is except for flavored or infused rums. Those can go sour. In fact I had a local St Martin mango infused rum that was unopened for several years. When I finally got to it, it was bad.

I consume the opened bottle in 3 months. I have sued wrap film to try to have a better seal when the bottle has a cork. FB
