Default El Dorado

What is the taste difference between El Dorado 15 and 25?

The El Dorado 25 is much drier than the 15, it also has more smoky oak flavor throughout the body and the finish. I like the 25 but drink more of the 15 since it is less expensive and invites me to sip faster than the slower-sipping 25.

Last week I picked up 2 bottles of El 15 for $22 each at internetwineandspirits. The 21 is very good also. Of course when I saw Clement Cuvee Homere for $80,well.........I had to make the 2 bottles of El worth the shipping.........

I just sampled my first bottle of El Dorado 15. Caveat; I'm nursing my way back from a recent cold so my tasting and nose are off, but I was eager to give this rum a try after all I've read about it. I used my standard quaff, Pampero, as a comparison. The two are very different and even the Pampero tasted off to me yesterday.

Anyway, the 15 was even sweeter than I was expecting, though everyone says "sweet" in the first sentance. I tasted some oak as well though it was muted by the sweetness. I expect this would be a good cigar rum.

I look forward to giving it some more passes when my senses are up and running because I suspect it will go down differently (and better) when I'm fully back.

I haven't tried the 15 y/o yet, but have finished off a half bottle of the El Dorado 12 year old over the past 2 weeks. Although I enjoyed it, I was a bit put off by what I describe as an unpleasant "cigar ashes" taste, which is clearly not present (to my taste buds) in my standard English Harbour 5

How would you folks describe the difference between the 12 y/o vs. the 15 or 21 y/o? Is the "cigar ashes" I'm tasting what you describe as "smoky oak"? If so, I doubt I'd appreciate the more expensive 21

still learning.....

The 15 is a little richer, and has a bit more depth than the 12. You might be tasting the charred oak flavor in the 12, it may come through more on its own. The 21 is a very rich rum, but many prefer the 15. This is definetly a different flavor profile than the English Harbor 5, so it may be very evident to you.

Just as a side note, ED 15 is my "go to" rum for cigars. It pairs well with many full bodied cigars.

OK, I had to break out my recently-delivered box of rum from Sams.
Yes, the ED 15 is smoother, richer, sweeter and deeper than the 12.

El Dorado 15 has long been "the cigar rum" in my book, along with Barcelo Imperial.
