Congratulations America. You made the choice the rest of the world wanted. Hope the rum and cigar choices were also spot on

A great night, and thank you Paul! I was out of Pampero but found a bottle on the way home, so settled in with that. Nothing like a glass of Venezuelan rum to enjoy the irony of political events.

This forum has been amazingly free of political content for the time I've frequented it, but notwithstanding the potential consequences, I will hazard a toe in the water. Last night was a watershed for us, and I truly hope we can move forward in a spirit of cooperation and begin to heal some of the divisions that wounded us heretofore. Apologies from this Yank for having been terminal bores at best, and making you suffer terrible English, overwhelming power plays and the detention of your citizens.

What the world needs is more rum, and more rum forums. Ready access to Cuban cigars would be a plus for my world, but I think overall, things are looking up!

Obama will change things. When he comes to visit other countries, the large, enthusiastic crowds will make the Pope jealous. Perhaps some people in these other countries will like us again. It's been a long time. He will certainly seem like a genius of the highest order compared to Bush.

If we begin talks with Venezuela and Cuba, that's a good start for rum lovers.

As I sipped some Diplomatico Reserva last night I completely missed the irony until I ran out of that rum and switched to a bottle of Cuban rum I found in my bag when I returned from England last week.

Being in Chicago last night was truly an experience that I'll remember for a a long time.

More so than Obama getting elected, I'm just relieved the Republicans are no longer in power. They are a danger to the world with their crazy outdated fundamentalist and self-centred views. McCain and Palin would have polarised the US even further and probably brought about WWIII.

As for the rum, I enjoyed a couple of glasses of Barbancourt 5 star.

Any chance of Obama ending the embargo on Cuba? It seems unfair that you guys should miss out on all that good stuff!

One hopes that he will take a less myopic view than previous administrations.

The only downside to the election in my view, is that actress/comedienne Tina Fey has probably lost her job on Saturday Night Live TV impersonating Mrs. Palin.

Despite the media hype and Mrs. Palin's self inflated view of herself, I think she will fade to black quicker than former Vice Presidential candidate Dan Quayle did.

PNP (Pro Statehood) candidate and current Resident Commissioner Luis Fortuno won by a landslide over incumbent PDP (Pro Commonwealth) Governor Anibal Acevedo-Vela. Governor Acevedo-Vela was recently indicted on 24 Federal counts of campaign fund raising fraud. He refused to step down, insisting that he was a victim of Federal "persecution". Proudly, the Puerto Rican electorate did not buy that bowl of rice and beans. Virtually every town Mayor turned over to Fortuno's Party as well, giving Fortuno a mandate that has not been seen here in a long time. The PIP Party (Pro Independence) lost it's franchise garnering less than 2% of the vote.

Interesting to me is that the great State of Alaska chose to re-elect a convicted criminal to the Senate no less.

In an attempt to stay on topic in this thread, A good friend came over with a box of Jose Marti Robustos. I supplied a bottle of Ron del Barrilito 2 Star. We took a machete to some coconuts in the yard. 2 Star and fresh coconut water it was as we listened to the results come in over the radio.
