On June 9, I celebrate the completion of 52 weeks of reviews of classic Mai-Kai rum drinks on TheAtomicGrog.com with "The Mai-Kai Mixer," featuring exclusive cocktail flights, live surf music, and a DJ spinning retro music.
The event runs from 6 to 11 p.m. in the legendary Polynesian restaurant's Molokai lounge. The first 30 people who sign up can participate in the "blind tastings" of three flights of vintage cocktails. Prizes will be awarded to those who can guess which exotic drink they're tasting. The Mai-Kai recently restocked its bars with Lemon Hart Demerara rum after a 15-year absence. Cocktails featuring Lemon Hart are sure to be included in the flights.
Giveaways will be provided by The Mai-Kai, The Hukilau, the Miami Rum Renaissance Festival, and B.G. Reynolds’ Hand-Crafted Syrups.
Admission is free, and the three-drink flights will be priced around $15 each. The regular early Saturday happy hour featuring half-priced drinks and appetizers runs from 4:30 to 7 p.m. In addition, you can quaff a strong grog for half price all night long: The Yeoman’s Grog, an ancestor of the iconic Navy Grog.
