Default New Zaya, similiar to Angostora 12yr??

I stopped in a local haunt and picked up the last bottle of Zaya Guatamala they had and then decided to pick up one of the new Trinidad version from another store in town. I instantly tasted the strong vanilla taste that the Angostora 8yr has, so my question is has anyone compared the new Zaya to the 12yr Angostora. I have been wanting to try the 12yr, but if the Trini Zaya is on the same style, then I think I will pass.....I am going to savor the bottle of the old Zaya

All these rums come from Angostura. The 1824 is far different from the 1919 in many ways. A lot heavier and maybe an acquired taste for some, but in my opinion worth the extra. The 1919 is the perfect after dinner drink, a desert in its self. The Zaya is a combination of the two, but as you say closer to the 1919. The Royal Oak s a great mixer if you can get it, but the Single Barrel Reserve is my favourite at the moment, well worth the hunt.
They talked about a new rum when I was there last year, but haven't heard any updates since.

In my sampling of "new Zaya", I found it disturbingly overpowered with vanilla, reminded me unfortunately of Captain Morgan's Private Stock.

I won't buy it again.

I have both a bottle of the Trinidad Zaya and the Angostura 1919 open right now. I completely agree that they are very similar. The Zaya is smoother with a touch more vanilla than the 1919, but it seems to me they have their roots in the same place.

I don't think either is really that similar to the 1824.
