Default Greetings from a Rum newbie

Thought I'd do the customary thing and introduce myself. 40 year old boy from the UK working in IT.

Been into Rum for a couple of years now after a colleague introduced me to Mount Gay when we were on business in Europe. After a few duty free purchases in the airports managed to aquire a few bottles and started drinking more at home. I'm not at the alcoholic stage yet, but it wont be far away LOL.

Found a good Wine and Drink shop 20 miles from me who sell all sorts of stuff, over 400 Whiskeys, good couple of dozen Rums which I've sampled most already. Also purchased a few bottles off eBay too, some 23 year old Ron Zacapa.

Favourite Rums include;
Angostura 1919
Angostura 7 yrs - Dark Rum
English Harbour - 5 yrs
Mount Gay Extra Old

One surprise I picked up last night was a Mount Gay Tricentinnial bottle number 1216. Purchased on eBay in UK for Ј200 and drove into London last night to collect. Hasten to add to didn't stay sealed for long! Bargain though, I saw one go the week before last for a Ј300 reserve.

Anyway, enough for now, time to read to threads.

Bottoms Up!

Russ

Not sure about good hands, it will probably be gone within the month. No, just kidding!

It went at 6pm (BST) ish on Wednesday, only 3 bids and I managed to get it for Ј207. Had some nice history with it, the seller was selling for a friend who won the bottle in a raffle 5 years ago, she used to work in a cocktail bar in London somewhere. Now she's a Virgin stewardess on crap money so the sale has helped a little.

Just been reading some posts on spicing your own rums which I might give a try. I love Angostura 1919 and the vanilla aroma so might drop a pod in a Mt Gay to see what happens.

Also like the idea of putting rum in a wooden barrel to serve. One question though, will it change the taste or age the rum further?

Russ247, welcome!

The Mount Gay 1703, for 100's of pounds, dollars, etc. less, is worth a try before breaking the bank. It is a true sipper which rewards in all aspects of description. A final surprise, too. After a healthy dram, a clove or allspice numbness takes over one's tongue for a couple of minutes.
