Great choice! I am originally from Maine (but just moved to St. Pete, Florida) and still spend a good deal of my time back home. I had a few articles about Eight Bells, their process, as well as the background and heritage of the family that made the rum. Maybe I can find them all and post some more information if anyone is interested.

As someone who works along the waterfront (all of them); I often get the chance to work assignments in Maine.

I tried to find a local source for Eight Bells Rum (here in Rhode Island) but came up short. I immediately contacted the distillery and received a reply from Ned Wight (owner/distiller) along with an invitation to visit New England Distilling.

Portland was maybe my business destination... but it was also dangerously close to Ned's new custom-made copper still. I made a short detour and was pleasantly surprised. Ned was gracious and spent some valuable time with a tour of his operation and a cask-sample.

It was a small operation (like most rum distilleries of mention), but there is a potential for returning New England to rum-production (and a great treat to pour over ice... at the end of a watch).
