Default Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva

I am just getting around to this rum and it is wonderful. The mineral content reminds me of Mount Gay XO, and it has just the right amount of sweetness for my current taste.

This is not a rum I can drink very much of, unlike some others that I probably had better start avoiding…

Nice.

I like it too. I picked up a bottle for what $21 at HT a couple of weeks ago? At that price, I thought it a bargain.

A bargain it is - that's certainly less than what I paid for it. It was still a bargain…

At the current $21.00 price, I must confess to over indulging in it, lately. Paul C, so right, it does hit that balance!

Hi Paul C.
Just a quick survey. How much did you pay for your Matusalem Gran Reserva ? And what made you pick that particular rum ?

I paid $10 more than these guys - $30.99.

What made me pick it was a few posts here that I have read and my local liquor store just picked it up. They have a pretty amazing selection for a small local store - Zacapa, Oronoco, Zaya, Matusalem, Depaz, Anniversario, a lot of high end stock with the standards - Goslings, Bacardi, Sailor Jerry, Trader Vic's, etc…

I'm a lucky boy - it's about 5 blocks from where I live. I don't feel bad about the extra price - they are very nice folks and it is so easy…

Paul C, $30.00 to $35.00 is the usual price range, I believe. I have finished at least 5 or 6 bottles at that price point and cannot express any regret. These deals come and go, I am just glad that this rum is finding a following which will stick with it after the sale is over. Rumor has it that it is made by Ron Bermudez (please, don't quote me...I could be wrong) which I can only find on my trips to NYC. Ron Bermudez is another rum which I find straightforward, unadulterated, and GOOD.

I live in Echo Park rumdog007 so the trip down to Costa Mesa is a "commitment". I fully intend to take it at some point and hope I can meet you and Forrest (and whoever else is a rum fanatic down there).

My local store is called House of Spirits and is just north of Sunset on Echo Park Boulevard. If any of you rum aficionados find yourself near there it is worth a look. Maybe on the way to a Dodger game.

Bah - you're probably all Angels fans…

I could probably work up some cheer for the Dodgers if they hadn't left Brooklyn, but I still hold that against them

I realize what an understatement it is to say "At $21, MGR is a bargain." I agree that at $30, it was good value. Hard to find a refined rum of that quality at 30 bucks. At 21, it is a steal.

To put things in perspestive, I'm in Denver this week on business AND to stock up on Ruby Rey 1L's. I spied the Ron Matusalem at $39.99, everywhere!
