Question What would your rum of choice in a Long Island Iced Tea be?

Hello all,

So if you had your druthers, which rum would you use in a Long Island Iced Tea? One of our friends knows that I am always mixing, so she asked me to recommend a rum for her LIIT recipe. (I am very eager to hear what specific brands she uses for the other liquors. Hopefully my wife will get the information so I can report back.)

Personally I just go with something basic like Cruzan light, since I cannot detect the individual components of the drink very easily.

Would a dark rum throw the balance of the drink out the window?

To me, the key to a great Long Island Iced Tea is using homemade sour mix. I told her that using fresh sour mix would change her life, but I don't think she is quite on board. Yet! I am going to griddle one up for her and convert her.

So what would your rum of choice be in a LIIT? As always, thanks in advance for taking the time to reply. Cheers!

Dave

To get this right, you need to balance the rum with the other ingredients. I like a silver/blanco tequila with a citrusy profile. Karma is my current favorite. I never go with a strong botanical gin. It's just too overpowering. Bombay Sapphire is perfect. OK, I use any good vodka.

Since I am rum-nuts, I can go in several different directions. If I want the tequila and gin to really shine through, I like a simple gold rum like Cruzan 2 Year Dark, Bacardi 8 Anos, or Monticristo. Then again, if I want the rum to stand out, I will use a sweeter rum like Zacapa 23. For a real spin around the block, try the spicy flavored Ron De Barrilito 3 Star. There's nothing like that combo.

Senior Curacao and Mexican pure cane Coke are requirements, too!

+1 on the real Coke

10 Cane would stand out in a proper long island as it is a bit raw. A smooth gold rum would just get lost in the mix. Cruzan Blackstrap might be fun!
