Default Sipping rums in the best Cuban style?

As the title suggests, what would picks be for a sipping rum in the grand Cuban style? I'm talking wide verandas, white suits, and cigars and rum under gently swaying palm trees... Thoughts?

A couple come to mind

Vizcaya VXOP. Not like any Cuban rum I've ever had but has a kind of gingerbread thing going. Anyway it is a pleasant rum to sip

Matusalem Gran Reserva

Now to me I will take an El Dorado 12 or 15 over many Cuban rums. I enjoy them often on my veranda with the palms swaying, the ceiling fan spinning with a Habanos cigar in hand, san white suit.

I have come to really love Legendario, an authentic Cuban Rum. However as you are speaking Cuban Style then perhaps the real thing is unavailable in your locale, in which case a fine Venezuelan rum like Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva would be a fine substitute. Or Juan Santos a coffee infused Columbian Rum.

Of course I am sure others will soon add to this list.

Default Cuban Rum :)

My Brother and I had the pleasure of doing a 2 week bike tour of Eastern Cuba in 2007. Our Canadian guide, Tom, from www.cuba1tours.com (Vancouver) introduced us to sipping Rum. Until that point, I would only drink white Rum in Cuba Librй. He introduced me to Ron Santiago. I fell in love with it. It is made in Santiago de Cuba in the old Bacardi distilleries. I guess that launched my appreciation for fine rum. Of course, the Cuban cigars also adds a touch to the experience. I have also tried Legendario when I was in Varadero in 2008. I found it to be more of a Liqueur. My wife and I do enjoy it.

I returned from Bermuda last week and while I was there purchased a Bottle of Goslings Old Rum and a 23 yr Ron Zacapa. I will be sampling the Ron Zacapa this weekend. On the cruise ship going there, I was able to sample the Goslings Amber, Black Seal and the 140proof Black Seal, They would not open the Old Rum so I have not tried it yet. the 140 proof gave quite a jolt.

best regards,

John in Quebec,

Try some of the better Puerto Rican rums. I'm a fan of Ron del Barillito, for example. Matusalem is also a great suggestion.

Although unfamiliarity with Cuban rums tempers any advice hereby offered, Ron Atlantico might be a good choice. The Ron Cubaney line, also from Oliver and Oliver in the DR (as are Vizcaya and Ron Atlantico), is reputedly made in a Cuban style. The quality of the 12 year old we've tried would suggest that the 15, 18, 21 and 25 year old are worth seeking out.

I'd give the Brugal lineup a whirl. Great mixers would be the Carta Blanca and the Anejo. Sippers would include the Extra Viejo (also great premium mixer) and the elusive Siglo de Oro.

Any Dominican rum, for that matter, could fill in nice for Cuban style rum. IMHO.

From Panama, Abuelo rums are considered by most Panamians to be Cuban rum because it is made by people of Cuban heritage. In my experience, the Dominican Republic rums are the closest, across the board, to those from Cuba.

I have to share an experience related to the "Cuban Style". Sitting on a Cubana flight while Jahruba made magic with his Djembe, and the flight attendants dancing and clapping in the aisle of the plane. Yeah, it was Havana Club, and we were feeling no pain. Fifteen years ago next month.

Many a summer evening has been spent on my front porch sipping Cruzan Estate Dark Rum combined with a couple ice cubes. A good maduro cigar enhances the flavor of the rum and visa versa. I am fairly new to rum but I know this works for me.
