Mount Gay Sugar Cane Rum/Brandy done?
I just checked the MG internet site (new and pretty cool) looking at the new bottles and saw that they no longer list the sugar cane rum. Are they gonna be making it any more? Actually just to be certain, it is made out of molasses and aged between the eclipse and XO right?

Yes it is made from molasses, and it is in between the Eclipse and the Extra Old in terms of age. When I was in Barbados in 2001, I visited the Mount Gay Visitor Centre and was told that the Eclipse is aged for 2 years, the Sugar Cane Rum/Brandy for 5 years and the XO for 10 years. However these figures have since been contradicted by other posters.

James,
I just got back from Barbados and a visit with the great folks at Mount Gay. Lots of changes coming up. The Sugar Cane Rum/Brandy depending on where you live is being phased out and being replaced with an overproof rum. So grab your bottles of the Sugar Cane Rum if you like it. I think the Special Reserve could be leaving us aswell.
The Premium White is now a different blend and called the Eclipse Silver, very smooth compared to the White, very enjoyable mixer.
All MG rums will be switched to a flat bottle like the XO and 1703. I think I have a photo of the new Eclipse bottle somewhere and will post it later if I have time. The Mango and Vanilla have been discontinued a while now and may be replaced with other new products.

Thanks Rumelier, so it sounds like they are keeping the...
eclipse, mgxo, 1703
and adding an overproof, white or dark?
and dumping the sugar cane brandy.
There's a bunch of good rums hitting the market right now and I think Im gonna keep the cash to my chest and let the sugar cane brandy slip away. More along the lines of saving for other bottles.

I am a fan of the sugar cane rum...it was very versatile!!!
Will look to stock-up accordingly. Although I think Bacardi 8 is filling this void. Need to try it in a mojito!
I also heard they were working on a heavy pot-still rum as well. I think it will be along the lines of Mt. Gilboa.
Bring on the overproof!!!

It's a shame about the Sugar Cane Brandy. I agree with Mistahunter that it's a versatile product and I enjoy it in cocktails and drinking straight.
The Special Reserve I will not miss though. I never really found a use for it.
As for the bottles I'll be sad to see them change. I like the classic bottles that are being used now and the XO in its own to separate it from the line.

The Sugar Cane is a terrific mixer. Makes great fruit diaquiris, like the great recipe for Strawberry Ginger Daiquiris in that section of this site.

Thanks for the comment Rumelier. Mount Gay had a change in US communications and I haven't been able to get much out of them. I'll miss the Sugar Cane Rum, but I'm not in charge of their marketing. I won't miss the Special Reserve or their flavors, which by the way, no way I tasted them with could even tell what flavor they were trying to emulate.
