Default Rum and milk

When I first read a recipe that combined my favorite spirit and milk I got a sour taste in my mouth. Then I realized that I like rum and milk products in the form of Cruzan's Rum Cream, which has since been discontinued.

Today, Demerara Rum Cream is available and in the islands, there is a milk, sugar and sea weed mixture called sea moss that is commonly mixed with rum. There are few things better than flying fish sandwiches washed down with a healthy glass of sea moss and rum. One thing to avoid, however, is adding even a squeeze of lime to a cocktail containing milk.

And then there's Castries Rum Cream, or Nutz 'n Rum from St Lucia or Nut Power from Antigua.

I have a can of Jamaican irish moss here...well then it could be used to whip up a drink with say El Dorado 15 + some milk?

I'd use something lighter like El Dorado 5 year old, Appleton VX or maybe Cruzan 2 year old.

At the risk of sounding naive...wouldn't the alcohol in the rum curdle the milk??

I don't know. I guess it was just my initial reaction to reading about rum and milk combined in a drink. Plus I had forgot about white russians as it has been a long time since I had one. I'll go to the back of the class now.

Don't be so harsh on yourself. I am a complete newbie to this stuff

That being said, if you think about it, there are an abundance of milk and cream examples in the liquor world

Bailey's irish cream
Mississippi Mud
White Russian
Kahlua and cream
I am sure there are others. Most of them are schnapps based drinks and the like.

I sometimes mix rum with milk, condensed sweet milk, and coconut milk...+ ice..and a dash of grated nutmeg.

You listed off those drinks and I remember a favorite dessert. Kahlua in milk over ice cream..hmmm.

Now if one were to use milk as a base for a rum cocktail, which would be the best rum to use? Something flavored and with a low ABV??
