Default $300,000 worth of rum stolen

South Carolina:

Thursday, February 19, 2009
Source: Post & Courier
Burglars stole about $300,000 worth of Bacardi rum from Ben Arnold Beverage Co. on Commercial Circle sometime over the weekend, Hanahan Police Lt. Michael Fowler said.
The suspects cut through the warehouse wall, and once inside, disabled the alarms and phones, Fowler said. The thieves also took two small safes, the contents of which are unknown, he said.

I told my friends in Charleston I didn't have any Bacardi in the collection. I don't think they understood! I've had about ten phone calls today!

Next, they will have to hit the grocery store or highjack a truck for the Coke.

A rough calculation of $300,000 / $20/bottle & 12 bottles / case = 1250 cases of rum.

This is about what will fit in a 20 foot container. Most spirits are shipped in 20 foot containers since this is close to the weight limit for highway transportation.

I'm sure we'll never know this, but it's interesting to wonder if the thieves were cherry picking pallets to load.

For that kind of heist I think they must have had a quick fence.

Coincidentally, I just received a 20 foot container of rum. I will be auctioning the contents via MoR Bay as soon as I can make a complete inventory.
