Default Westerhall Plantation Rum

I have included a quick review of Westerhall Plantation Rum from Grenada on my site. Details about production are conflicting. Some say it is made on island and others say it is imported from Trinidad. Nevertheless it is a surprisingly good rum.

What a fantastic set of reviews on that page, rumelier. Thanks for the info.

My local liquor store has a few bottles of Westerhall on the shelf, and I enjoyed a bottle last summer. Interestingly, each bottle is hand numbered and has a slight but noticeable difference in color. I picked the slightly darker of the three and thought it made a great summer rum.

I'd heard that it is imported from Guyana, but again this is rumor and Im just adding to the confusion. Love the westerhall and am looking forward to reading up on it at your site rumelier.

When I was last in Grenada, Westerhall was blending aged rum from Trinidad while their still was being repaired, etc., etc., etc.
The bottom line is that it is a flavorful rum, I just wish the story was more in line with what I saw, but then there's a little magic in every bottle and if they told you everything, well, it wouldn't be magic would it?

James, Ed, I think reading between the lines, it was probably after the hurricane (can't remember the name) that devastated Grenada that the switch from their own rum to imported rum began. Just a guess, but could be right. I believe they also produce the Grand Havana Rum, which I recently picked up in Cayman.

Good info Rumelier, the wife and I are still slated for our honeymoon in Grenada, so I might be able to clear up questions. I will say that this is a good, different sipper. Little burn, whole lot of flavor. A great date any night it is in my glass. That bottle of wax covered westerhall looks mighty delicious....

I edited most of my first book anchored in the lee of Hog Island about fifteen minutes by bus from Westerhall and stopped there regularly, until I found out that the lovely lady that was working there was married to a friend.

The version that I heard was that Westerhall stopped distilling their own rum in the mid 1990s. Since then, they've been importing rum - in bulk - from Trinidad and either ageing or blending or both. Whichever version is correct, Westerhall Plantation Rum is the best rum in Grenada and one of the best in the entire Caribbean.

Westerhall also make two overproof rums - Jack Iron White and Jack Iron Dark, both of which are 70% alcohol. What I haven't yet been able to discover is whether either of these is the same as the "Jack Iron" that you get in bars in Carriacou.

The distillery that was damaged by Hurricane Ivan was Dunfermline. I've heard vague rumours that they might be intending to restart production there, but I haven't heard anything definite.

lololololol, grenada does sound like a very special island, with a strong rum culture. I can't wait to go.
