Newbie Question
Hi all
I've been trying out a few different rums for quite a while mainly the Havana Clubs, Salior Jerrys and Morgan Spice among other which i seem to have forgotten the name of (possible related to who much rum i drank). Anyway I've got a weekend away and thought i would treat myself to a bottle of one of these 3:
Havana Club 7yo
Angostura '1919' 8.yo.
Sailor Jerry (i know i shouldn't really include this for comparison as it spiced but i though i would throw it into the mix)
There all around the same price which woudl you suggest?
Or if anyone else could recommend a different variety for a simular price, feel free.
Cheers

Personally among those rums, I'd go with the 7 year old Havana Club since you say the prices are comparable.

I agree with Ed the '7 year old Havana Club' is a great buy for the money. I'd also suggest Flor de Caсa 7yr for the price.

The 1919 is more pure sipper, I'd go with the HC7. Sipper but I've heard some also make some mean cocktails with it. But then I'm a yank...and that is the forbidden communist fruit.

Welcome to the forums Ad! Although I live and grew up in London, I was born just down the road from you in Pontefract and most of my family still lives there!
First of all, it really depends what you want to do. Are you looking for a sipper or a mixer, or a rum that does both?
I'd suggest ignoring the Sailor Jerry and going for either the Angostura 1919 or the HC7. Whilst both are good rums, they also have their detractors. The Angostura is too vanilla sweet for a lot of people, however I love it and I regularly enjoy drinking it neat. It would also go very well with a mixer.
The HC7 is a good example of its style, kind of peppery and with a bit of an edge, overall a decent sipper. However I do feel it has a somewhat over-inflated reputation because of certain US-Cuba related issues. In my opinion it's good, but not that good. It does work very well as a mixer though!
Let us know what you choose!
By the way, Waitrose has a very good selection of rums at very reasonable prices. The English Harbour 5 year old would be a good choice - fantastic quality at a brilliant price of £18.99. They also carry the Cockspur 12 year at £17.99. You cannot go wrong with these two!

Welcome, walters2001!
I am a big fan of the Havana Club 7. It is an easy sipper that does not overwhelm the palate. Also, I drink the the Angostura 1919 regularly. I prefer it while having spicy food since the sweet vanilla taste serves to refresh my palate.
One of the MoR members, The Rumelier, has blended and bottled a rum with a similar profile called Bambarra Reserve. I like it even better than the 1919, now. However, you will probably need to visit the Turks and Caicos to get it!

Around here the HC 7yr is only $30. Out of everything I can find it is by far the best value for the quality. It's great as a sipper or a mixer.
I haven't tried the 1919 so I can't really offer an opinion there.
