After meeting Matthew Rowley in New Orleans, I finally had time to read Moonshine! on an unscheduled flight from LA back to Chicago.
As is pointed out by another reviewer the weakest part of the book are some of the graphics. But overlook the cover art and read this book if you are interested in some of the history of homemade spirits in America.
And like Matthew, I don't condone making spirits unless you're licensed by your state and national government, but if you are, or are working on the licenses, you're going to get a very good start on making your own spirits.
The detail drawings for making a still make it look easy, but unless you've used an oxy-torch before you're probably going to make a mess, but you're going to have more fun than you've had in a long time.
One of the best researched books I've read in a long time, Matthew has clearly been close to the source of illicit spirits more than a few times. And his insight into making your first batch suggest he has asked a lot of questions, and listened.
Moonshine is available through
Matthew's website.
