Default Hi from North Germany

Hi, I'm a Brit having lived in Lübeck, North Germany most of my life.
I used to be more of a whisky drinker, but around my 50th birthday I started adding rum to my drinks cabinet.

I started reading reviews as I hadn't a clue about the variety of tastes rum can offer.
I like my rum like I like whisky, neat, this with the overwhelming praise led to the latest purchase, a bottle of Zacapa 23

Zacapa is altered post distil and in my opinion not much more than over priced sugar water.

As a brit give Pusser's a try, in Germany we are lucky to be able to buy the 75% overproof. It needs to be diluted to drinking strength 44-48% but a brilliant true navy rum.


Also there are distinctive styles of rum depending mostly on country of origin but sometimes one country can make a style of rum more commonly found elsewhere. I would suggest you try rums from all styles and places of origin as they are as distinct from each other as the origin of a whisky style.

Pot stilled Jamaican rums are some of my favourites, high esters and packed with flavour. Smith and Cross or Appletons (namely the 12 year).

Don't pass up the great opportunity you have to buy Johannsens or Braasch which are fantastic historical 'Flensburger Verschnitt' obviously out of Flensburg.

These rum houses have a wide variety of differing quality and tasting rums.

Any way enjoy your new journey into rum but if I would just say that rum is not like whisky in the way that age is not as important.

Don't get sucked into flashy expensive bottling's they are often rubbish and altered with colour and sugar (sometimes even flavours!). Look at rum with a proven history of quality for example Pusser's emphasis intended Appletons, Mount Gay, Doorly's (or any Seales product), Smith and Cross, Flensburger Verschnitt, El Dorado's (sort of), Barbancourt. There are many more that I am forgetting but you get the idea.

I found myself going back to Zaya recently and it is way too cloyingly sweet for me now. I haven't had Zacapa in some time but I assume the same.

@1%, for some reason, I can't see your original post, but thanks for the comments.
I can see where you're coming from with "over priced sugar water", and I agree: I've replaced that end of the spectrum with the much superior Venezuelan "ron botucal reserva exclusiva" as it is marketed here in Germany, probably more widely known as "ron diplomatico". Quite a bit cheaper, too.

On Guatamalan rums: I've got quite attached to the "Ron Malteco", 10yr variant, a nice sipper for 20€

I've finally got round to ordering a bottle of Pusser's overproof
