It is a good Demerara rum, but I prefer El Dorado. I know I spent too much for the bottle I have. I had big expectations, and was a little disappointed. It is a very good rum, however.

The El Dorado rum has a much better balance while I found the Hallmark to be much drier and heavier on the smoky oak/tobacco flavor. I found the Hallmark heavily discounted so I didn't complain but I've heard a few grumblings from others who didn't find such a good deal.

When I dream up a better job, I'm going to take it. In the meantime, the research continues.

Yes, balance is the key word. I re - tasted the Hallmark today. The Hallmark is drier, and has a certain strong herbal quality to it, anise, maybe even rosemary, and has much sharper edges. The wood is strong, and this rum reminded me of whiskey. The finish is quite bitter. I also wondered if it had a decent amount of caramel coloring, as you can taste it and it is evident in the nose. It has a unique flavor, and I would call it a good rum, but it does not have a lot of balance, it could use a hint of sweetness, and the flavors can be a little sharp. I paid $66 dollars for it quite awhile back, which was too much. It might be a good rum to have with a strong, earthy cigar. El Dorado would be the choice.
