Default Ron Mocambo 20 years: unique?

I missed the London RumFest because I was flying back from Mexico that weekend, and I landed too late on the Sunday to make the event. It was disappointing to miss what looked like a great show but at least I managed to pick up a couple of bottles of Ron Mocambo 20 years Art Edition before leaving Mexico.

I opened one of them the other night and I was surprised at how odd, or should I say different (?), this rum was. I'm not very good at detecting or describing flavours in rum, all I can really say is that there is overwhelming flavour in this rum which I can't quite put my finger on. Whatever it is, it is unique, at least in my experience.

Is the flavour profile of this rum similar to other Mexican rums, or is truly unlike anything else out there?

I also stumbled upon the 10 year pistol special edition, but it was not particularly cheap. In fact, it was not much cheaper than the price listed on a UK website, so I'm pleased I didn't waste any of my 1 litre allowance on it.

I just don't know what to make of the 20 year though...

I acquired a bottle of the Mocambo 20 last week and have been enjoying it immensely....very smooth and easy sipping neat or with ice. With little experience of Mexican rums, I have also found the flavor quite unique. Whatever it is, a little tonic enhances it. The 15 year is available just down the street and I'm thinking of doing a taste comparison. It is my understanding that the pistol contains the 10 year.

I am impressed with these rums. The 10 pistol is a collector's item with it's unique bottle. The 15 is rich with caramel and oak flavors. The 20 takes this aged profile further. I could get used to drinking these rums often. I only wish they were easier to find.

Yes, I also understand that the pistol contains the 10 year. I wonder how the 20 compares to the 10 and the 15?

Robert, do you have the pistol and if so, have you opened it? If I bought it, I'd be tempted not to touch it. Or alternatively, I'd drink the rum and then fill the pistol back up with some bog-standard cheap rum and put in on the mantel piece. Decisions, decisions!

I acquired two pistols, two 15s and two 20s several months ago. I immediately opened one of each to sample them, leaving the others for my collection. The 15 is rather light in color for a true 10 year aged rum, but the unique bottle is a desirable attraction. I have it on display next to my Khukri dagger bottle - the rum weapons.
