Default NYT review of Hurricane Club in NYC

Sam Sifton, the NYTimes resto reviewer, has just published, today, a review of The Hurricane Club in NYC, which I think is interesting and fun to read. I hope you all get a kick out of a SERIOUS publication's take on the current love affair with Tiki. BTW, Sifton gives it one star which would seem to be a low score, but I have had a couple of email exchanges with him in the past and here's what he has to say about the award of stars....

"Here's the deal... if we're giving a star, that's not a bad thing, as too many people seem to believe. It's a good thing."

So here's the link to the review... and also, Sam Sifton is a very good reviewer IMHO. A great writer, and... knows his stuff without a doubt. Enjoy!

I think that was a fair review. I think the place is really more beautiful than he allows and I think he was a bit generous with his comments on the cocktails - they're not bad, but they are a bit sweet and not very memorable.

he didn't mention one of my favorite features - there's a shoeshine station outside the bathrooms where you can get a shine for $4...while drinking a nip of rum poured from a fountain in the wall! I understand they change the rums, but I had some brugal while I was there. I don't really think you need to get the shoeshine either.

I would recommend people check this place out...and also recommend they do so before the "Tiki Disco" opens next door with its velvet ropes and attracts the beautiful people who will likely spill over to HC.

I'll look for the rum and the shoeshine. Haven't had one in years, shoeshine that is.
