Default "Flagship" or standard?

I would be interested in trying new things. Of course, i always have an eye for quality and money is not a problem, if the product is excellent. But i cannot decide by myself and i would very much appreciate some advice from experienced rum drinkers.

Some reviewers claim that "flagships" (the "best", most expensive rum of a brand) are difficult to drink, taste badly compared against less aged products of the same brand, or find other faults, while at the same time exalting a cheaper product of the same line. I will give some examples.

Some people claim Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva tasted much better from them; compared against the Ambassador. Or "accuse" the Ambassador for "artificial taste", "ethanol-like taste" etc.

For Zacapa, also. They bash the Royal, while praising the XO, or even the cheapest product in the series and claiming that its price is absurd for its real worth.

What is your opinions on the matter in general? And something that bothers me specifically... Should i get:

1 Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva OR Ambassador?
2 El dorado 15 yo OR 25 yo (i know it has ~700$)?
3 Zacapa XO OR Royal?

And why you believe that is best?
