Default Rum shopping list for BVI

Headed to BVI (British Virgins) in January '09 for two weeks.

Which rums should I look for?

We'll be cruising around on a boat; is there any particular spots we should check out?

You'll definitely end up at Foxy's but don't overlook the Sand Bar where the Pusser's Pain Killer was invented in the next bay to leeward of Great Bay on Jost Van Dyke.

For rum I start in the grocery stores in Road Town, there are a few warehouses on the east side of Road Bay that might have a few brands that aren't in the Road Town stores but the selection in the grocery stores will surprise you. There are also a few boutique shops that may have some new offerings. When you get to Can Garden Bay on the north side of Tortola you'll find the Callwood distillery and you might find Styles Callwood and his Tortola Spiced Rum. If you see him, please give him my best.

Being British you'll find Havana Club and a few other rums which aren't sold in the US islands. You will find rums that aren't on this site, there are new rums coming to the market all the time, some are good and some should stay on the shelf. Barbancourt 8 year old is generally a good value in the BVIs. Enjoy the trip, the BVIs are probably the most convenient place to sail for a week in the winter.

Even if the wind pipes up you're fairly well protected and there are plenty of anchorages.

That's great Ed, thank you.

I'll let you and the Ministry know how we make out.

If anyone else has a favorite, please let me know.

Off topic.

Rum Runner Imports, I buy my Havana Club up in Vancouver, BC when I visit. Where do I find the Barrel Proof? I have all my stores scoped out for the HC7, Blanco, and the Especial. But, I've never seen the Barrel Proof. Any ideas? Thanks!

Haven't seen it myself, but i'll keep an eye out though and let you know when I track it down. Im a bit surprised that whomever you get the rest of your HC from, doesn't carry the blue label.

Thanks, I really appreciate it! I hit the Burnaby provencial shop for the Blanco Anejo because it has been the one that always has it in stock. The store on the Steveston Highway always has the other 2. No joy for the Barrel Proof, though.

BVI does not disapoint...

The whole point of this trip is to island hop, on the cat, so other than for stocking up, we have not spent much time in civilization.
;
So far I've eaten cactus fruit, caught some groupers and enjoyed 4 rums: Goslings (Bermuda), MGXO, Castillo Gold (Puerto Rico) and some local fare: Callwood Spiced.

Right now we're just getting ready for dinner, we anchored off of Jost Van Dyke, 200 yards from the SoggyDollar Bar...The whole gang had a couple rounds of Painkillers and played what we called "hooker" --> a metal loop on a string tied to a high branch that you must swing onto a hook that is set into a tree. (harder than it sounds).

will post again when more adventures and rums are had.

Did you get a chance to head down the beach from the Soggy Dollar to One Love? The owner Seti and his crew will show you a great time. Ask for some of the rum they have BEHIND the bar. On my trip there, we had a great time on that beach.
I still have a bottle of Callwood Spiced from the trip I have yet to open.

Cool

No Hank, missed that one...We might head back there again though...I'll have to explore...

We dropped anchor in Cane Garden Bay last night and in the morning we made out way through the chickens, goats and puppies to the Callwood Distillery. Rustic to say the least, on the verge of collapse is more likely...but tonnes of charm.

Styles was off running around so we spoke with "Kervin". We sampled the various rums and ended up buying a 5 year white cane juice rum and a 10 dark cane juice rum. We also got some pony flasks of a delightful pineapple wine and a guavaberry wine....I would kill for some ice cream to pour those two on!

off to another bay, another beach, another day.
