Default My Search for the Ron Zacapa XO

After about 48hrs of endless phone calls and e-mails to different liquor stores accross the country, I have confirmed that this rum is not available in the US. So how do I get my hands on this? Here are my plans.

Plan 1. Since I live in Washington DC, I placed a call to the Guatemalan Embassy. I got in contact with a gentleman who will be heading back to Guatemala for a few days and we will try to work it out so that he can pick up a few bottles for me.

Plan 2. Again since I live in Washington DC where we have a huge central American population, I figure that I might very well work with someone who is from Guatemala and still has strong ties there. Sure enough on my first attempt I found someone and we will try to work out the details to see if we can get someone to bring me a few bottles.

I hope to have this by the end of March. If I pull this off this would be my greatest hustle ever!!!

Of note, I heard a myriad of reasons as to why the XO is not available in the country, but the most interesting one is that it does not come in a standard liter size. I was told that since it is smaller than a 5th but larger than standard liquor bottles that you find in the states, that is one of the problems.

Anyways folks, keep your fingers crossed for me. By the way would anyone know the going cost of an XO in Guatemala right about now. I don't want to under/over pay these folks that are going to help me.

Since Zacapa distribution is now in the hands of Diageo, you may not find the rum you are looking for in the US for sometime. On the other hand, you may find another product under the present XO label.

In Guatemala, Zacapa XO is bottled in 700ml bottles which can't be sold in the US. Only 50ml, 200ml, 375ml, 750ml, 1 liter and 1.75 liter bottles can be sold under current alcohol regulations.

As for the price you will pay for something which is otherwise unavailable, keep in mind that if someone is willing to do you a big favor you should be more interested in developing a better relation than saving a couple of dollars and the rum will taste better.

Just out of curiosity, how old is the XO??? Since the others are 15 and 23 years... How does it compare with the others

it's a 25 year old and it's outstanding. Perhaps not worth the price differential but it's a great tasting spirit

the age of the Zacapa Centenario has long been stated as 25 years, but at a recent dinner here in Coral Gables, I was given a presentation by master blender Lorena Vasquez in which she stated it was based on a new blend of her 30 year aged rum presented in a new bottle.

The XO product was originally planned to hit the US market in February 2008, but the recent change from Dana Imports to Diageo has changed all plans. Diageo is not talking about Zacapa at all until after they take over April 1 and Dana Imports is not moving forward to introduce the new XO in the final months of their participation.

Many of us have been buying Zacapa XO in other countries. My first bottle was given to me by Ms. Vasquez, but subsequently I've been able to get bottles of XO from Trinidad and Turks And Caicos Islands.

Anyone who has friends visiting from Guatemala, Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, or the Caymans may be able to get a bottle delivered when they visit. We've been paying about $75US.

This rum is available in dutyfree shops in many major US airports. Do like I did and ask an aquaintance that is traveling interrnationally to purchase a bottle for you.

Thank you for the offer. I currently have 3 different folks working on this for me. So I think I'll be ok. However, I don't think this rum is available in the states for sale due to the the liter volume laws we have in the country.

I picked up a bottle last month while in Antigua, the local duty free stores, Quinn Farara, had lots of it in stock at around $100 a bottle.

So how was it? Did it disappoint. How does it compare to it's younger brother the 23.

Already had some before via a German internet site and it was wonderful. More floral and honeyed than the 23 year old and gives off wonderful aromas when warmed in the glass...well worth picking some up if you can find it
