I notice that flavored rums are around 25% alcohol. Is that because a lower proof rum is used to make the product? Or, is a typical 40% alcohol used and the additives change the volume to get the lower proof flavored rum?

That's a good question T2R. When you give the alcohol % I believe you are meaning % ABV and not proof.

Even 40% ABV alcohol has been diluted with water before it reaches the market.

It would be my guess that many of the flavored rums on the market (and in reference to member "Bill" I refer to rums labeled as flavored) are using a base spirit that is refined to a very high degree ABV. A lower distillation point might allow too much of the rum "side effects" to show through if it is not blended very carefully.

Thanks Rum Runner for the info!

Does anyone have a source for flavored rum recipes?

I went ahead and began the process of making some banana rum but have some questions. I am currently working off of a liqueur recipe but this will end up very sweet and higher proof than typical flavored rums. If I cannot find the info I will reduce the sugar and dilute to 50 proof.
