I don't mind it with a little coke ... One or two drinks is enough at one sitting

I like it on the rocks, but not my favorite. Not bad for variety.

This thread has been dormant for almost four months, but I must add my comments, as I am very new to rum. I have only purchase 7 bottles of rums so far and for the most part I have enjoyed them all to various degrees, and the Kraken, which is the only spiced rum I have, is my favorite so far.

I especially enjoy it mixed 50/50 with plain, cold, spring water.

I picked up my first bottle of Kraken the other day. Just had a little bit so far - a couple sips straight, just to get and idea of the flavor, and then mixed with a coke.

I need to spend some more quality time with it, but my first impression is that I kinda like it. As far as spiced rum goes, I think I'd rather have this than say, Sailor Jerry. I could see sipping it neat or (more likely) on the rocks.

My brief couple of sips actually brought to mind "Root", which for those who aren't aware is an all-natural root beer liquor - interestingly, made with a rum base (perhaps a subject for another thread). I'm not trying to say that Kraken tastes like root beer, but just that it somehow reminded me of Root... there may be some similar flavor notes there, although I don't have any Root on-hand to taste it against.

Jason,

I really like your description of "Root", as if fits perfectly for one of the nuances I was picking up but could not place it. I also pick up a fair amount of "Clove" and then lighter notes of "Tar", "Black Licorice", "Cinnamon" and of course "Vanilla". I have a hard time picking up the flavors when drinking Kraken straight but when I mix is 50/50 with water, the flavors become more distinct.

How sad, from your comment, it appears that you will not be trying any, and therefore, you will never have the opportunity to appreciate how truly good some of them are!

I do for a long time my own spiced rum (in la Réunion, this is a longtime tradition called rhum arrangé and is offered to visitors to your home, in every restaurant, etc., not only tourists).
This does not prevent from enjoying sipping rums or some cocktails, just another way to appreciate rum.
And the only ready made spiced I ever tried was Chairman's Reserve, a really good experience.
Here just a few arrangés you can do, but the only limit is your imagination:

I like the comparison to Root as well. Root is a bitter spirit, and, in my opinion, Kraken has a deep and subtle range of bitter flavors. I don't prefer Kraken for any drinks, but it's serviceable for some cocktails.
