Default What is a "dark" rum, exactly?

Dumb question from the new guy, here.

Are the three rums listed below considered to be "dark" rums? Is a dark rum any rum that is not a light/clear rum? Just trying to differentiate between gold, brown, and black. Thanks.

Myers Rum
Pusser's Rum
Cruzan Blackstrap Rum

Myers's is definitely dark - and not very good in my opinion. Pusser's is dark although I've never tried it. Don't know about the Cruzan Blackstrap.

Bear in mind that a lot of the dark rums are dark because they've had caramel added, and not just through ageing.

I would say any rum that is closing towards the colour black has A LOT of caramel colour added and you can taste it in the product. Maui Dark rum for example has so much colour added it stains the bottle, yuck!

To answer the question 'What is Dark Rum?' Any rum can be dark rum as long as it looks dark. Generally the ones you refer to are relatively young 2-4 year old rums with a lot of caramel colouring (and other additives in some cases).

Any rum can also be a white / clear rum, even an aged product. It depends how much filtration is used. A natural aged white rum usually has some colour to it and most white rums go through a charcoal filtration to remove every bit of colour. The side effect is that such heavy filtration also removes a lot of the desired flavours.

In any case I think categorising rums based on their colours tells you nothing of how the rum is made or whats it like. As noted above any rum can be either dark or white or anything in between depending how much caramel colour or filtration is used. Food for thought.
