Default February 2010 Mount Gay Sugar Cane Rum

If you have been lucky enough to find Mount Gay Sugar Cane Rum on your local store shelf let us know what you think.

I was introduced to this rum at the Antigua Yacht Club in Falmouth Harbour sometime in the early 90s. During the Classic regatta the Yacht Club ran out of Mount Gay Refined Eclipse so the bartender showed me Sugar Cane Brandy as this rum is known in the islands. Straight, or on the rocks was less expensive than mixed, mixers can be expensive in the islands. Suffice it to say that for 5EC, this was one of the best deals going. EC, or Eastern Caribbean dollars are equal to little more than 35 US cents.

I found it in a couple of places: an small bottle shop in Montclair Village (Oakland, CA) and surprisingly enough at a BevMo in Orinda. Just a couple of bottles each however. Definitely tasty.

Crown Liquor in Montclair?

I live next door to the proprietor of that fine establishment, John is my boy!

We should have a cocktail if you are in the area.

I just ordered this spirit from Hitimes in Costa Mesa, I am sad now to find I could get it in the village, from a friend no less.

I've never tried this one, and I've read reviews that are all over the place. Can someone provide their impressions of Mount Gay Sugar Cane Rum? Thanks.

Edward, I was just at the distillery and this rum is no longer available. However they have introduced a new one Mt Gay Black and it is now available.

There has been talk for a long time about Sugar Cane Rum being discontinued. My understanding is that Mount Gay Black is a black version of Mount Gay Eclipse but details are still sketchy at this point.

One of the reasons I made Mount Gay Sugar Cane Rum the Rum of the Month is that it is probably going to be discounted in some markets and hard, if not impossible, to find in other markets. Members here are always on the lookout for good rums at good values and Mount Gay Sugar Cane Rum certainly fits that bill.
