I was lucky enough to be in New York last week and caught up with Gary Nelthropp, president and master distiller at Cruzan. There is more of that interview coming, but here is a short comment on the agreement that was signed by USVI Governor John deJongh earlier this month.

You can also find this and other interviews here.

Ed, let's hope that Beam Global decides that they need to re-introduce the Cruzan 5-yr Their flavored rums are fine for trying to win over, say, flavored vodka drinkers, but I'm glad to see that the recent Cruzan advertising that I've spotted does not emphasize the flavored rums, but rather the light, dark, and Estate.

I think that Beam-Global is savvy enough to realize that Cruzan has a lot of untapped potential for growth and seriously go after the rum enthusiasts market. Let's hope so.

For my part, I badger every Beam-Global person I meet about doing better things with Cruzan.

Gary talks about the old Estate Diamond. And that part of the interview is coming soon.

Being that I am hooked on Captain Morgans Private Stock, Sailor Jerry, and the Appleton Line, would cruzan be a good choice? I have had my hands on the single barrell and the black strap, but haven't gotten up the guts to try it for some reason.... I do like the flavored stuff, but on rare occasions, so any and all info on Cruzan will be nice.

Hey i know from most of the stuff you have mentioned . . .you would not be 'that-into' Cruzan -- but. . . i am guessing --from your preferences--that you would find a real good friend in the Cruzan Black strap (the only possible thing that could mess with you is the sweetness, and i don't think that will cause you a bit of trouble...) So young0076 i am staking my reputation on the line here and making a recommendation-- (and if it is to sweet mix it with straight rum!).
The Black Strap is great tasting rum... soft, sweet, friendly-- overlooked by a lot of folks because of the nice price but great stuff-- good clean molasses with delicate clean rum tone drifting in the background!

Good suggestion forrest. Unlike the other Cruzan flavors, as Gary points out, Blackstrap is something of a hybrid. Aged rum with hi grade molasses to flavor the rum. Since it's aged you can drink it straight but I prefer to use it in addition to other rums in a cocktail.

When I want a rum and coke the blackstrap is the only rum I reach for.
