Appleton Estate Extra sediment in bottle
Just picked up a couple bottles of Appleton Estate Extra. One of the bottles has some translucent whitish sediment in the bottom. The rum in the bottle with sediment is also slightly darker than the other. There are some other small differences in the bottles(different production runs probable). Drink this rum occasionally and enjoy it. Just wondering if this sediment is normal.

I had this happen with a bottle of Barbancourt 8yr...did not seem to effect the flavor. Would be interested in know what causes this as well.

I'm bumping this thread just to see how people reply. I've never noticed this with any of our Appleton products - even the bottles that have been sitting on the shelf for a long time.
My first instinct would be bottle contamination and the colour difference due to light deterioration - does anyone have any other ideas?

Like Paul, my first thought about the color was a change due to storage in sunlight, which I see all the time in the islands with bars that store dark spirits in windows. This doesn't seem to be a bid factor with rum, since the bottles seldom last long in the window, but whiskey seems to have a longer shelf life and thus are exposed to the UV for a longer time.
As for the sediment, if the bottle was temperature cycled several times that might have contributed to the sediment. I'll check with Appleton and see if they have any ideas.

And with that, Ed set Dood's new goal for life. To be able to say, "I'll check with Appleton on that for you" and actually, you know, mean it.

Ed's Little Black Book
Dood, yes, Ed has an enviable Little Black Book of great contacts throughout the rum universe, as do some of our most esteemed contributors, such as Ian and Paul in London.
Of course, this comes from years of reaching out to rum companies, importers, distributors, bartenders, sailors, authors, one-legged pirates and hookers with a heart of gold.
Opps! Sorry, wrong black book.

No distillery has ever answered me yet except Antigua. I don't believe others care much...
