Appleton Extra - Screw Cap

The Appleton V/X and now the Extra have a screw cap while other rums I now have employ the use of a cork. Does anyone know if the continued use of the screw cap provides as quality seal as a cork?

Screw cap is actually the better sealing method as it does not break or dry like the cork does. It doesn't come off as easily as a cork and usually never leaks, it is quite airtight. As the Count said, the screw cap is better sealing, but the cork has a different feeling.....so i prefer cork.

Some rums I like a great deal come with screw caps, including all my FDCs,
the aforementioned Appleton, and a recently acquired taboo rum, Santiago 11 anos. I prefer the look and feel of a cork, but once it's poured and in the glass, all that matters is the taste.

Nice info Count, thanks. Good to know that the continued use of a screw top is as good or better than a cork.

The wine industry is moving towards cork closures as they're called in the industry. If you're collecting rums and plan on keeping them for more than a few years screw caps are the way to go. Corks look nice and have a nice feel, until they begin to disintegrate, which they will over time.

I've seen more than a few bottles of old rum with cork closures that had weakened with age and in some cases had begun to visibly leak. Corks aren't meant to be reused many times, especially those that have to be removed with a cork screw.

Synthetic corks are better than natural cork closures but if you're transporting bottles of rum, especially bottles that have been opened, there is a real risk of leakage. And if you're carrying opened bottles on an airplane the lower pressure at high altitudes will almost certainly cause the cork on a half full bottle to leak.

Yeah..so its a lucky thing my rums never lasts that long..

Appleton VX and Extra have corks? In Canada as far back as 5 years both VX and Extra had screwtops.

Same here. I've never known Appleton with anything other than a screw top.

I suppose there is a way to read my original question and assume that I thought there was a cork used by Appleton at some point in history. No so. I bought the V/X, it had a screw top. I now have the Extra, it has a screw top. Then the question about screw tops.

Me not expert on anything. But trying...
