Default Gauging interest ... in The Rum Diaries.

Hi Rummies,

So, I'm posting a message here to gauge interest in my new venture. As I mentioned a month or so ago here ... I've just relocated from the US to New Zealand and I'd like to have a crack at home rum-making because it's legal and unregulated here.

I can't afford to buy a still right now: just relocated, took a paycut to come here, started over with nothing, wife is 6-months pregnant, etc.

I'm thinking of setting up a blog that will allow family and friends and interested folks to donate through Paypal toward a still. If I can get half my costs covered, I'll pay for the other half. I'll post regularly on the blog as I make my rum and let it age and uncork it and taste it and you can all follow along on my journey.

But I don't want to insult anyone. I wouldn't want you all to think I'm begging. And I don't want to invest too much energy in something that will fizzle like a wet fart. So what do you all think. Shelve my plans, or move ahead?

Thanks,

--ck

My first thought is how how you intend to stay married with such a plan.

More seriously, there is so much more which is needed than the still, which I sure that you have considered. But, each step, raw materials, barrels, space, etc. will set you back far more $$$ than you anticipate. But, that said, you have my blessing!

You don't need money to buy a still. Build one.

Heck, you can make your own rum using a pot, a wok, and a bowl.

This concept seems very much like kissing one's sister...I could go on about this...but decorum prevails.

I'm not sure I get you, Rum Runner. I have a sister, but I still don't get you.

Dear cjkemp,

I think that you have far too much chutzpah for such a small venture. Try thinking bigger.

I'd suggest that there exists a wealth of venture capital with the current dearth of IPOs. Floating a proposal (on Lemon Hart 151 perhaps) might loosen the purse strings.

Well you already have my support cjkemp, i hate Paypal, but i will find a friend to send some cash your way if that is how you want to do it.

Also i feel i would be remiss if i didn't point out a couple great sites:

Everything you need to know, and wonderfully clear!

i don't know if these are expensive, but they look cool!

The web is filled with DIY sites about making liquor. Check out this cheap but effective stove-top still from Instructables. http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-make-a-still/
