Default Zafra Rum

I found out about this rum from Pete Johnson (of Tatuaje Cigars) who recommended it as one of the best he'd tried. We recently got it in Atlanta and I picked up a bottle today. There are a couple of other threads here that mention it as well.

I tried this neat at first and it didn't disappoint. Drier than Zacapa or Zaya but very complex. The first sip was subtle and first at then really came alive - oak, vanilla and spices with an excellent rum flavor. I was very impressed with the rum 'essence' in this one. I may have a new favorite. I was concerned that the bourbon flavor would overpower the rum, as I've found with some bourbon aged beers, but that was not the case.

FWIW this scored a 95, landing 2nd place, in the Ultimate Beverage Challenge in NYC.

I've tried Zafra, and I like it very much. It's a Panamanian export-only brand. It's imported by Dana Imports, the folks who first brought Zacapa to the U.S.A. before Diageo got ahold of it.

I've requested that the wholesaler who works with Dana in D.C. please order it in, but it's taking longer than I'd hoped that it would.

It is not hard to be drier than Zacapa!

LOL, yeah - that's the truth. I wrote that up on a cigar forum I'm on and EVERYTHING gets compared to Zacapa over there. It's a good 'point of reference'.

I ahve been trying to carry this rum in my store. I called the importer a few times and no one picked up. I then sent them an e-mail and it bounced back. Frustrating!

I emailed them via the website and didn't get a response. Was trying to find out if they were distributing in GA but finally found it.
