Default A six way Rum Tasting

Last night I was invited by one of our local boutique Liquor stores (Vines in Riverbend) to act as a consultant in their first ever Rum Tasting. My payment was free rum which considering this was my first gig as a consultant, was fine with me. The line up was impressive:

Zaya 12 Year
El Dorado 15
Diplomatico Exclusiva (12)
Flor de Cana 18
Juan Santos 21
Appleton 21

There really was not a bad rum in the line up. I found the Diplomatico and the Juan Santos were my favourite rums in the tasting. The Diplomatico for the nice range of complex sweet flavours that made it really stand out. The Juan Santos was kind of an anomalous rum with more of whiskified rum profile, but with great complexity and an unmatched smoothness.

The El Dorado, the Flor de Cana, and the Appleton all shared a aged woodiness, with the El Dorado being the most complex in a good way, and the Appleton and the For de Cana each showing evidence of being in the oak just a tad too long (for my palate).

Zaya disappointed me just a little, and perhaps my palate had been compromised so I will keep an open mind. The sweetness of Zaya was just a tad over the top, and seemed to me to be too much of a good thing. (I had enjoyed a complimentary Coffee rum (Juan Santos) just prior which as I said may have compromised my palate for the Zaya.)

Now the Interesting thing was the room's perceptions. At the end of the event everyone was asked to give a show of hands for their particular favourite of the Evening.

The results were:

Zaya (5 persons)
El Dorado 15 year ( 8 persons)
Diplomatico Exclusiva Reserva (8 persons)
Flor de Cana 18 yr (10 persons)
Juan Sanstos 21 Yr (8 persons)
Appleton 21 (1 person)

I may have miscounted but the room obviously was completely divided as to the rum and rum style they preferred. To me this just reinforced that the selection of rums for the tasting was stellar, and nobody was a loser. It also was a nice reminder that all of us have different preferences.

Just to clarify: Was it El Dorado 12 year or 15 year?
Also: Were you disappointed that Flor de Cana didn't stand out more?

Sorry about that it was the ED 15. (I shouldn't post when I'm in a hurry.)

I wasn't disappointed in any of the results, except for maybe the Zaya, but when you do side by side comparisons with six spirits, the results should be taken with a bit of a grain of salt. There is always something left over on the palate from the previous glasses.

Of the FDC's I have tried the FDC12 and the FDC7 are my two favourites so far. That oakiness of the FDC 18 knocks it down for me a bit. (It was the most popular in the room though.)

I'm actually surprised the Appleton 21 only received one vote. Were these spirits tasted neat?

I am a big fan of the Diplomatico. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, everything was sipped neat, with only water on the side to cleanse palates between samples.

Appleton receiving only one first place vote is a bit of a shock, but to be fair I only heard one person suggest they were disappointed with Appleton 21. This really was a case of the entire room liking every rum we tried. So I wouldn't consider Appleton a loser.

Here is something kind of funny though, I did hear lots of comments from persons who thought Appleton 21 had the nicest...richest nose. The wonderful nose did not translate into the same taste on the palate which I believe confused many of the tasters.

extremely interesting chip, it just goes to show that tastes are up to the individual. Could be with the appleton 21 that it isn't for the unexperienced and for the more tanned palate. As for the Zaya...it one of those one you've got to be in a mood for. When you are, nothing else will do and its perfect. But lined up with a bunch of stellar hard hitting rums it is just gonna make you disappointed. Sounds like a blast, congrads on the 1st experience!
