Default Things I learned from Family

Often you hear about weird superstitious things from family about how drinks are poured and what to do with it and the list goes on.. Most of my "Rum" knowledge comes from my great uncle who served in HMS. I try to take alot of stock in what he says, but I am not trusting what he says to what I read on this board and else where.. But then it could be the yank in me..
1. No ice, rum must be at present temperature when brought onboard
2. If too warm, water cooled (has strange has it sounds I witness him stick his bottle of rum in a bag, tied it and thrown it over board)
3. Once cooled, pour and wait for it to warm up before drinking. (Then why waste the time in cooling it???)
4. Its best to store the rum in a wooden crate with wood chips (not sure what type of wood chips it is)
5. If its given has a gift, it must be empty before the year is up.
6. No more then one lime per a bottle ( he puts lime right in his bottle, and I have no clue why???)

Please tell me he isn't the expert of Rum???
But I got nice bottle from him recently, I haven't opened it, and a free bottle of anything to me is nice its Zaya from Trindad (I read about it, seems like mix opinion) going to try it tonight.. One shot a night keeps the mariner right

it just dawned on me.. Scurvy! thats what is going on with that lime, but why would the modern sailer be worried about that???

So I tried out my first premium rum tonight.. I decided that bottle of rum isn't going to age it's self and I finally ran empty on my low grade stuff (Capt M.) Zaya from Trindad, it doesn't taste like the rum I had a Trindad, it taste much better..
I sat down and enjoyed it, not talking with friends and smoking.. I sat back on my balcony and watched the night sky and tasted it, its the most I can do for it, out of respect that it was a gift to me

It tasted very smooth, the bite was fast (the numbing of part of my tongue) The smell was like vanilla.. The vapor trail was strong, it filled up my nostrils.. It demanded respect, there wasn't a urge to down it fast.. The second and third sip was the same has the first. There was very little after taste.. What got me was there wasn't a alcohol bite on my jaw like the low grade stuff..This is a sipping rum

Bluemidknight, welcome to the for-rum.
i like your take on things-- very measured, yet open.
Zaya Trinidad is a fine cup, and your uncle did you a solid with it.
i hate to be the bearer of bad news (and it seems like you may have already guessed this...), but you uncle (sweet and well meaning as he may be) isn't completely accurate in his rum-ology..
Don't worry though, he still sounds like a heck of guy to have a snort with!
a drink with forrest . . .
