Default Reviews of Bacardi Rums

Bacardi 8 Year Old Rum

For my introduction to this review I thougth I would write a short history of the Bacardi Company. I did a little research and realized very quickly that a “short’ introduction was impossible. So I changed gears and wrote instead a longer article called “Ron Bacardi & Cuba – Turbulent Times” and published it “Extras” Section of my Blog If you click on the article name you will be brought to the article.

One thought I would like to add, is that I went into this review fully expecting to dislike the Bacardi 8 Year Old. It is, after all, quite fashionable to bash Bacardi and claim with a somewhat superior air that anything they make is for the masses, and therefore obviously inferior. Let me say right up front that it is just that type of intellectual snobbery that made me pass up this wonderful rum for almost a year. This rum doesn’t just break the stereotype I had in my head … it destroys it!! Here is an except from my review:

“…. I could not help but notice that the delivery of the Bacardi 8 year old rum was very similar to the delivery of a really good whisky. I am not talking about flavours mind you, I am talking about style. The rum carries a lovely light smoke, and a firm oak flavour which provides foundation and character. This is not a sweet rum dripping with honey. It is a firm well oaked rum….”

Would you consider this a "sipping rum?"

Well then, perhaps they deserve a second chance. I've not looked very close at Bacardi, however, perhaps I will pick up a bottle of this some time in the near future.

I haven't seen an age statement on Bacardi 8, did you see one on the bottle?

When I dream up a better job, I'm going to take it. In the meantime, the research continues.

It says Ron 8 Años on the label doesn't it. Also says on the website it is aged more than 8 years.

Default Review: Bacardi Oakheart Smooth Spiced Rum

For this review, three friends and I performed a side by side tasting comparing Brinley Gold Shipwreck Spiced Rum with the Bacardi Oakheart Spiced Rum and the standard-bearer for the spiced rum category, Captain Morgan’s Original Spiced. Each of these rums is built on the foundation of aging in American oak barrels, and each of these rums seems to walk the path of a vanilla and caramel rum accented by fragrant spices which compliment the rum but do not to dominate it.

Hey Chip - Just getting around to responding to your review on Oakheart.

Man,... I swore I'd never buy another Bacardi product after discovering fine sipping rums via the prodding of a close friend. They were a revelation to me on what a Rum can really be,... and what my palate was expecting a Rum to taste like back in the day. So now I LOVE RUM,..... mostly neat over a cube. But all I saw was Bacardi way back then,... and cheaper rums attempting to compete that I figured could only be worse (...and they weren't things labeled Plantation, Diplomatico, Zacapa, El Dorado, Doorly's etc., etc.) So Bacardi pretty much monopolized the market back then and put me off of Spirits altogether. It was all just Aviation fuel to my palate and in my mind. So for decades, beer and wine were pretty much the only things in my alcoholic beverage wheelhouse. And I could only despise Bacardi all the more for what they did to dampen my past culinary possibilities once I discovered REAL RUMS. And I am still harboring a considerable amount of animosity towards them..... Grrrrrrr. Then along comes your review. I resisted, but my Rum buddy demanded we give the Oakheart a try once I showed him the review. Man, I am really getting tired of eating crow with my Rum. But for the money, I'll have to say this inexpensive mixer has found it's way into my galley. I still sneer at it though,... every time I reach for it. I hate Bacardi. Grrrrrrr!
