I don't know of any rum that is extremely smoky as you describe, standing downwind of a bonfire. Chances are that it was a French rhum, as you were in Paris, but most bottles don't have stories on their labels.
Being a tribute to a style of rum leaves a lot of doors open as the boutique bottler is, or has come, to the rum industry and the options are pretty diverse as to what people will put in a bottle and call rum.
If you have a chance I'd suggest trying some Demerara or aged rhum agricole from the French West Indies but I hesitate to imply you're going to find the smoky character you describe.
