Default Do you know Rhum arrangйs ?

Hi everyone,
i'm french and in our islands, rum is a sort of religion
We have a recipe, a speciality that is named rhum arrangé.

You take fruits, spice or anything you like and put it into rum, with sugar ; after 1 to 6 months wait you have a new drink, really, really good (but strong )

I just wonder if in US you already know that ? and if some of you practice this "art of living"

Sorry for bad english

If you want to see some of our recipes and photos: My website about rum arrangé

Thanks for your responses

Every island has its own style of flavored rum, rhum arrangй, or simply 'spice,' but I have to agree that the French do it like no one else. Fresh fruit, spice and good rum make a difference.

I really wish that I could read French. Granted, some of the recipes are fairly clear and a little help from Babelfish will work wonders...

Rhum arrangи is something that really interest me, I`m always having a bottle or two of my own, that is - made either from recipes from La Reunion or just my own experiments. The best so far is a vanilla rum made with dark rum, Tahitian vanilla, light and dark brown sugar. I`m soon going to try to make a rhum combava.(kaffir lime, vanilla, sugar) and maybe a vanilla/banana with hint of ginger..
I only make couple of bottles at a time because I don`t want them to go bad before I have finished them. But half the fun is making them..

Marsupouse, may I ask which Island you are from? I only ask becauase I may have some questions. There is quite a bit of good "spice" in the French Islands, and it has been my experience that a good rum flavored with natural ingredients is much better than the "flavored" rums that are so readily available.

Don't worry about them going bad. Unless you're putting fresh meat or seafood in the rum, in large quantities, you probably won't have a problem with it spoiling.

OK! (lol...) the image of "fresh meat and seafood rum" just passed in my mind..what a horrible thing that would be..
Well, now I feel no worry to make a lot of rhum arrangées! I thought that the flavor went "bad" or "less good" after too long time on the shelf because of the fresh fruits.
