Summer is Rum season

There seems to be a misunderstood impression in the media that rum is a summer drink, someday they'll learn that rum drinkers enjoy our favorite tipple all year round but in the meantime, look for a number of rum-focused articles in the press.

A friend of mine was really hot on "seasonal drinking" a few years back. The basic premise was that you were only supposed to drink lighter or clearer alcohols during the summer (for coolness) and drink darker, heavier liquors in the winter (for warmth).

I used this idea to prove that rum is - by far - the most superior of all liquors because it is one of the rare drinks that is appropriate in either time of year.

Mojitos in the summer, rum and cider in the winter...what more proof does one need?

Its funny to see that rum is very much associated with winter in e.g. Germany and Austria, expecially in combination with tea!

Ed, I agree that the USA mainstream media is myopic in it's view of the versatility of rum. The fact that America is finally "discovering" that rum can be something other than a white liquid with a bat on the label is an encouraging sign. If one chooses to gaze beyond the "borders" it is apparent that rum has been embraced the world over, in many forms and many uses, according to culture, custom, and tradition....and that is cause for celebration! i have now seen some better rums becoming available even at local large grocery chains like pavilions/vons and ralphs. nice to see a shift away from only flavored rums. Recently saw Zaya pop up at pavilions. Like that guatemalan with the honey finish

, then move on to the "drinking rums" (Mount gay eclipse, etc.)

In the summer we tend to have cocktail hour outdoors and sip away at "drinking rums" (MGXO, Bacradi 8, etc.)

This past winter I was a Florida "Snowbird" and now have my seasons mixed up.
Sipping, Drinking, Drunking now all the time.
