for what its worth right now I have to hunt down all of those, lololol, makes me run around some. ED distribution is spotty here, and although I can find the older FDCs, the 7 has given me trouble. Don't even get me started on the HC7. It'll cost me that much in gas just to cross the border to get some.

I'm grateful the ED lineup here is very solid. From the 3yo to 15yo we'll never run out. I could say the same about HC except that we're running out of Barrel Proof and my rum 'allowance' is spent!

I picked up a bottle of Bacardi 8 year yesterday for $22 in New Jersey. I drank about half of it tonight with a friend who's a rum afficionado. It's not as bold or oaky as I thought it would be. It's oaked and yet it somehow remains a fairly light rum. I would say that it's less oaky than Abuelo or Mt Gay XO. For the price it makes a nice drink. If you want more whisky-oak or more rummy depth, Abuelo 7 year from Panama is nice and about the same price.

I agree with you Edoc, the 8 has a lot of its oak replaced by the sherry cask, which makes it more floral to me. The Abuelo IMO is very cuban like. Smoky, refined, and with the feel that there is always a little more that you can't describe. Both are great rums, especially for the price.

Y'all know how happy I am that this rum is getting a good tread-run here!

I agree Rumdog,

I was afraid I was setting myself up for hate mail when I expressed my opinion that this is a great rum.....turns out maybe I was right!

Artic Wolf-- I need to also comment on Royal Oak, which I first read about from one of your posts.

It's nice to identify a group of rums at an affordable price point. Bacardi 8 Year, Angostura Royal Oak (and to some extent Kraken), Abuelo 7 year, Barbancourt 4 year, Oronocco, Khukri XXX, Santa Teresa Grand Reserva, El Dorado 5 year-- all of these are quite serviceable rums in the $15 to $20 range. I can tell this is going to be a great summer!

You can add the Bermudez 5 Anos and Don Armando 10 Anos to that list, I am just sipping the Armando now and it is going down very nicely. (Watch for my review later this week or early next.)

Yup! Stick to your guns, er, that golden palate of yours! It has served you well.

BTW, I dig your reviews.
