If this does happen in my life time, I think there will be initial huge interest, but when people realize that Cuban rum is not that special, interest will level off. I'm not sure how many rum producers from the Caribbean currently buy their bottles from the US, few that I know of. Having easy access to large stocks of used bourbon barrels may help rum production in Cuba though, for the better.

I'd love to see it. But strangely enough I think the biggest obstacle would be Bacardi. I could see a huge initial wave and then it tappering off as well but if you look at HC vs Bacardi they have different products. Bacardi has gone the flavored club rum route where HC looks to be the premium mixer. I've recently watched the buena vista social club and have been on a daiquiri kick since. Been making them with Don Q but can't help thinking how they'd be better with HC. Thanks for the read rum runner.

I have yet to meet anyone who doesn't think it is easy to sell rum in the US. Especially when they have the lion's share of the market in their own country.

Considering the amount of competition in the US, I seriously doubt that anyone can come in to the US and sell a million cases of rum in less than a few years. And by then, the buzz about Cuban rum will have fizzled.

Six years ago I met with a French company that was going to replace Grey
Goose with their rum. I never underestimate the marketing projections of those with plans, and no experience, to sell rum in the US.

Hey, if it was easy, we'd have a lot more rum in the US than we do. I can think of a dozen rums that I'd like to be able to buy in the US.
