Default Gosling's Old Rum - is it worth the price tag?

I just saw a bottle of this for the first time on the shelf in a local outlet. $69 for the bottle. Boxed and in a bed of "straw".

Just how "old" is Gosling's Old Rum? I looked at their website, and I don't think it actually said.

Anyone try this rum? Is the $69 "experience" going to be really that much better than a $39 MG XO "experience"??? If someone has had this, can you please describe it?

Gosling's seems to get a lot of play and praise on this forum. Is this a "You just might see God" experience, drinking this rum, or are there better ways to spend my $69 (like two pretty good premium bottles of something else for $35 a piece?

I'm very interested in the answers to this question myself, as Gosling's Old is one of the few more usually available rums in it's price category that I haven't tried.

Gosling's Old is one of my favorite rums. It is refined and elegant with many subtle complexities. You have a great chance of liking this one if you like this TYPE of rum. Others in this category might be Santa Teresa 1796, Mt. Gay XO, Cartavio Solera, Cockspur 12, Flor de Cana 15, and Don Q Gran Anejo. Of these, I rate Gosling's Old at (or near) the top.

Daniel,
I don't find 1796 much like MG Old, but I do like both. I'm not a big fan of Cockspur 12, (I bought a 50ML bottle, downed it across two sessions and that's my sole experience with it) but I do like the run of FDC rums. I suspect this is like so many things, one buys, tries and decides. Everyone expresses universal appreciation, so how wrong can one go? I just wish I could buy it locally, as I do Black Seal.

Goslings Old Rum has a lot going for it. Unique tropical flavors, rich mature oak, smooth finish, nice balance. Good with a cigar. It's a grand old rum in a champagne bottle. Makes a great gift. Treat yourself for a special occasion.

Again, one of the great ones, in the deep, rich style of this type of rum. It will be up to you if you want to spend the $. I sip from mine as a treat, but I will replace the bottle when it is finished.

Adam, you should be able to find it in Florida. What area of the state will you be in?

Although I live in California, I travel to Arizona frequently. It is $57.00 at Total Wine and More in Glendale. Worth every penny. My first bottle was around $70.00 and I would pay that, too. I break this out for my friends and it is always a hit. A very accessible spirit to rum lovers and just plain drinkers.

Ok, you've had 10 opinions and we still don't have an answer. I think you owe it to this group to try Goslings, and let us know what you think!
