The Future of Lemonhart

I know that this has been discussed before, but a friend recently told me that they had been told by Demerara Distillers that Lemonhart is essentially dead as a brand.

Anyone know how true this is?

I keep hearing that they're dead and then not dead. Maybe I need to make a Lemonhart Zombie or a Lemonhart Corpse Reviver.

Frankly, Dood, I'd like to ask someone at Pernod-Ricard about this myself.

If they are willing to discontinue the 151, then what chance does the 80-pf have in a market awash with 80-pf rums?

No one ever, I mean EVER, asks me for the 80-pf, they always ask for the 151, and I have to give them the bad news.

This is a great question, and I wish that we could get a straight answer from somebody.

What is clear is that Lemon Hart's 151 has been discontinued and is quickly drying up nationwide. This is a pity as 151 proof Demerara rum is an essential ingredient in classic mixology, and LH is the last producer of 151 proof Demerara rum. I would have thought that a market savvy producer like El Dorado would have filled the void left by the departure of LH 151 by producing their own brand of 151. Having said that, I have to say that, IMHO, El Dorado's Demerara rums outclass Lemon Hart's products by a wide margin. All more's the pity that El Dorado doesn't produce a 151 Demerara.

It is an excellent overproof, but is straw-colored and not a substitute for the Lemon Hart 151. Possible substitutes in previous disscussions used the El Dorado 151 in combination with other rums:

Quite so. I carry it, and it's a tremendous bargain in 151-pf rum (currently around $7.00 less than Bacardi 151)

Lately, I've been selling more Cruzan 151. It is dark in color, similar to the Bacardi. Don't know how it compares with Goslings 151, which Ed has recommended as a Lemon Hart substitute.

The label on Lemon Hart 151 states that it is Demerara Rum. Demerara Distillers Limited, the company that used to make Lemon Hart for Pernod-Ricard and the previous brand owners, has chosen not to sell Demerara Rum to others in order to protect their trademark.

As I understand it there have been instances of blenders using the name Demerara Rum when they hadn't bought enough Demerara Rum, from the only company that makes it, to fill all the bottles being sold.

From Pernod Ricard's perspective, Lemon Hart isn't worth the time and money to market that brand. There's a lot of overhead at big companies.

I suspect that DDL will fill the void in the market in the coming year. In meantime, find a distributor that has some, buy it and enjoy it.

Its such a pity for us the consumers that LH 151 is discontinued. What i then would like to see in the El Dorado range is a dark fullbodied overproof demerara, letґs hope they make it.

I've never been able to enjoy LH151 in my cocktails since the pricing here is mostly related to alcohol content; higher the proof higher the price. Luckily we have a 100 proof demerara rum called Cabot Tower. It's very thick, sweet and powerfull rum. It's a great floater on my Mai Tai.
