Default Besy to mix with Coke, something else or just ice

Ive tried drinking various rums with either just an ice cube or some crushed ice but find it too burny on the throat so keep mixing it with Coke in at all glass (but Pepsi with a couple such as lams spiced as I find coke gives it a metallic taste)

Just been reding on here and a few mix with ginger beer...or other rums (got to try that!) and a few add water to their rum instead of ice.

What's the best way to drink these, I'd like to start sipping rum without the burning effect which ruins it for me

If you want a sipping rum, you might try something like El Dorado 12. I find it to be a very tasty rum and reasonably priced.

For Rum & Coke, I think spiced rums bring a little more interesting flavor. So maybe Sailor Jerry or something like that. (But honestly I've never really enjoyed Cuba Libres.)

I too endorse Sailor Jerry with Coke.

However the rum I tried that is one of My worst sippers I had is "Appleton Estate Reserve", taste like detergent.. soap gum yark! but mixed with Coke.. it's just plain phenomenal for me.

Instead of just too much sweetness, the Reserve was so refreshing! Just like Iced Tea.. it's sweet but also refreshing at the same time.. I find that this is what Appleton Estate Reserve does to Coke.. simply refreshing.. however I don't remember the mix ratio since it's been so long since I last had it!

I have a different ratio to be able to enjoy even mixed drinks because my taste buds aren't on the norm chart here.. I tend to have a girly palette... yes it's embarassing lol.

I think some people's palates are just more sensitive to alcohol, so it's hard for them to enjoy spirits neat.

That's why God invented cocktails!

Righto!!

My packages been delivered next door so can't get till later, so I've tried some Havana Club CBP with 2 ice cubes & a bit of cold water....nice! Bit burny at first (used to having coke with it) but its getting better after each sip! Also enjoying a good pipe with Amphora Full Aroma so I'm sitting here happy! Until the missis gets home & finds me KO'd on the sofa!

....I've started something now! Cokes gone back in the fridge!

I'm a fan of adding water, especially as the weather gets colder and ice becomes less desirable to include in drinks. If a rum is too hot, you can add water. If it remains hot, you can keep adding water. Ice will remove some of the aromas of rum by cooling it -- which is good for some rum flavors and worth trying for any rum -- but which can keep one from experiencing all of the aromas a rum has to offer.

Thanks for the reply, I really wish I'd tried this with the other bottles....missed out there. I knew I should have kept some Pussers & CM Private Stock behind!!

I've just tried HC Anejo Especial with 2 x ice & water. For me it's better with Coke, just doesn't have that good a taste now, the CBP tastes/feels much nicer/thicker (best I can describe it!) Definitely one to keep!

My 'go to' rums with coke are Chairman's Reserve and Havana Club 7.
