Default "Sneaky" Rum Punch

I tasted some punch in the Caribbean once that I didn't even realize had rum in it. Some of the fruit juices created a little "burn" going down that masked the usual "burn" of the rum.

The punch tasted so good! As you might imagine, by the third or fourth glass, I realized that it was more than just punch.

I'd like to recreate that experience. So the question is:

What rum punch recipe is the best combination of "sneaky" and tasty?

Your thoughts and/or recipes appreciated.

Thanks!

That's a tough one. The classic planter's punch serves the purpose. Orange and pineapple, (often guava too), dark rum, orgeat syrup, bitters, even cinnamon and nutmeg in some cases give the palette much to consider besides rum.

In general, lime has traditionally been a strong flavor that masks the burn. Lime based drinks are found in virtually every rum culture. The intense citrus, sometimes combined with other tropical delights is popular.

Experiment!

We've been making classic flips in the office today. Guinness, molasses and rum warmed and then beaten egg and sugar whipped into the drink.

I wouldn't choose to drink one but it's a great throw-back to colonial west.

We've also been distilling. Rich Woods fermented a molasses wash last night and we've had a pot-still bubbling away all day. Sweet sweet smell in the office but the resulting liquid is pretty crappy. Man, it's such hard work! Especially with our basic alembic still. Salutes go out to the guys and girls who do this well and make my fine rum

*salutes*
