Default Mount Gay Black Barrel - Whaaaa????

I've recently been enjoying Mount Gay's special small batch offering, Black Barrel. Nice stuff! But its "claim to fame", that "wow" factor that makes it so "special", appears to be that it is aged (or at least finished) in charred oak ex-bourbon barrels. And that leaves me with a nagging question...

Uh, aren't nearly ALL aged rums (at least non-agricole rums) matured in used bourbon barrels? What makes MGBB so different? Am I missing something important, like maybe its aged or finished in NEW charred oak barrels (such as would normally be filled with bourbon)? I can certainly taste a "barrel quality" that I associate with bourbon (never aged in used barrels). If that's not the case, then what's the big deal about the bourbon barrels -- unless they're not really completely EMPTY bourbon barrels (heheh)

It's the char. The bourbon barrels rum is generally finished in are not re-charred (as is the case here with Black Barrel I presume). They are charred when the bourbon is placed in them, but not again prior to placing the rum in them...if that makes sense. What I've read is that the Black Barrel rum is also placed in "heavily charred" barrels.

Almost every rum is aged in used whisky, and more recently bourbon, barrels. I think you'll find the biggest differences are the marketing behind these various rums and the coloring which much more effect on the spirit than most marketers or distillers will admit.

I found a killer cocktail, The Langston Hughes, from The Rum Club in Portland that specifically uses Mount Gay Black Barrel because of it's smokey flavor.

Check it.
